Plein Air Pastel at Olana (Hudson NY)
This eight-session course will use Olana’s artist-designed landscape as a source of inspiration for learning about plein air painting. Using pastel, participants ages 55+ will develop a working knowledge of painting, make a finished work and several studies each class, and gain the ability to paint plein air independently.
During this course, esteemed plein air painter Shawn del Joyce will connect students’ developing plein air painting skills with the work of Frederic Church, Martin Johnson Heade, and the Hudson River School to American Art. The course will be held during multiple times of day to give students an opportunity to observe the landscape at different times and explore the ways quality of light affect their plein air creations. Participants will leave with a working knowledge of painting, make a finished painting and several studies each class, and gain the ability to paint plein air independently, as well as a knowledge of the contribution of Frederic Church and the Hudson River School to American Art. $200 person, $150 members. Learn how to break a scene into value blocks and substitute color based on value. Great way to make colorful compositions with accurate values. Workshop open to any media. First day of workshop happens at Olana Historic Site en plein air where the value simplification approach will be demonstrated and used to paint the view from Church’s home. Nocturnes in the Studio Workshop
Learn how to paint the night! All rules of art go out the window when you are painting after dark. Work in the classroom during the day and learn to paint nocturnes from photos. Make a complete painting from start to finish, and learn how to mix cool silvery moonlight, and warm tungsten streetlight. Learn what gear to use for plein air.. Expect to make two paintings, one sunset and one nocturne. Photo references provided, or bring your own. Sign up for plein air workshop the following night for a plein air experience
Nocturnes Plein Air
Learn to capture the night! Nocturne painting has its own set of rules to capture the romance and intrigue hidden in the dark. Meet on site and paint with award-winning nocturne painter Shawn Dell Joyce to learn the tips and tricks of painting at night in public. Class will meet in downtown Dunedin before dark for demo and info session, then paint after dark for 2.5 hours. Instructor will demonstrate in pastel but welcomes all media (watercolor, oil, acrylic, pastel). You’ll create a finished piece, a value sketch and a color study. Painting area is near restrooms and very safe.
