Sustainable Art
 What makes art sustainable?

In my case, it can be the materials used to make the work, the subject of the painting, and also the impact the work has on the community. I use many reused materials in my work which are redirected from the waste stream by the Hudson Valley Materials Exchange. HVME is a nonprofit organization that helps reduce solid waste.

I also use local materials when possible, and a local framer, so that economic impact generated by the sale of my paintings benefits the whole community. This is called the "multiplier effect" which means the money stays in the local economy and generates local economic impact. Most frames are made in China and Mexico in unsafe and exploitive conditions. A local framer is paid a fair wage for their labor.

Most of my paintings deal with the subject of sustainability in some form. The "Heirloom Varieties" is about sustainable agriculture, and represents all of the unique varieties of vegetables you can only ind on local farms in NY. This series was offered as a fundraiser for the National Campaign for Sustainable Agriculture. Much of my work is used in the community to raise consciousness, or benefit progressive causes.

Sustainable art is also place-based, supported by the local community and reflecting the time and place of the artist.n a painting to see similar works.
